Tranzwatching in Auckland, New Zealand
NZ Herald's columnist Brian Rudman, who specializes in local issues, has rubbished the NZ Government's rejection of Auckland City's case for an underground rail loop tunnel. This loop is intended by Auckland planners to link Britomart with Mount Eden at a cost of $2.4 billion.
Rudman says suggestions by Government officers that Auckland Transport evaluate better options for bus lanes, bus priority signals and even a bus tunnel as an option have already been examined and rejected, a bus tunnel more expensive than a rail tunnel, "...none of the above improvements are going to cope with the predicted 32,000 extra passengers into the CBD in the 2041 morning peak. For that we need the rail loop." ends Rudman
